Summit Court System & Jurisdictions

Summit County has an extensive court system. The main court, the Court of Common Pleas, is divided into several divisions, each handling specific categories of cases.

  • General Division — felony criminal cases, large civil lawsuits, and appeals from lower courts. Case searches for this division are available through the Court of Common Pleas online system.
  • Domestic Relations Division — divorces, property division, alimony, child custody. Filing requirements are posted on the Clerk of Courts website.
  • Probate Court — estate cases, guardianship, name changes, adoptions, and issuance of marriage licenses.
  • Juvenile Court — cases involving minors: offenses, status violations, dependency, and neglect.

Besides the Court of Common Pleas, municipal courts operate within the county, including Akron Municipal Court, Barberton Municipal Court, and Stow Municipal Court. These courts handle misdemeanors, small civil claims, traffic violations, and small claims cases. Federal cases related to the county fall under the jurisdiction of the Northern District of Ohio District Court, which has a branch in Akron.

Not sure which court is handling your case? Start by searching by last name on the Clerk of Courts website — the results will show the division and case number.

Summit Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings

The hearing schedule for the General Division Court of Common Pleas can be checked through the case search system, which displays scheduled hearing dates for each specific case. Enter the party's last name or case number — the system will show upcoming hearings.

For other divisions:

  1. Go to the Clerk of Courts website and use the Records Search function.
  2. Find the case by last name or number.
  3. View the scheduled hearing dates in the case card.

Municipal courts maintain their own calendars. For example, Stow Municipal Court can be contacted at 330-564-4200 to confirm hearing dates. Akron Municipal Court publishes its schedule on its separate website.

If you need the schedule for today or the coming days, call the appropriate court office directly — online calendars are not always updated in real-time.
